A magnitude 2.9 earthquake near Hamilton, Hamilton City, Waikato, New Zealand, was reported only 29 minutes ago by New Zealand’s Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in New Zealand. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 4.50 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at 6:04 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Te Poi (pop. 840) located 4 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Matamata (pop. 6,300) located 7 km from the epicenter, Waharoa (pop. 1,500) 11 km away, and Putaruru (pop. 4,700) 23 km away.
