A very shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported in the morning near San Jose de Ocoa, San José de Ocoa, Provincia de San Jose de Ocoa, Dominican Republic.
According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Thursday, September 4th, 2025, at 9:28 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in San Jose de Ocoa (pop. 21,100) located 7 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Azua (pop. 59,100) located 27 km from the epicenter, Bani (pop. 66,700) 28 km away, Villa Altagracia (pop. 40,000) 38 km away, Bajos de Haina (pop. 66,800) 48 km away, Santo Domingo Oeste (pop. 701,300) 51 km away, Santo Domingo (pop. 2,201,900) 62 km away, and Concepcion de La Vega (pop. 102,400) 82 km away.
