The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in the Philippines near Calbayog City, Samar, Eastern Visayas, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, at 6:21 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Capul (pop. 4,800) located 12 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Irosin (pop. 20,700) located 41 km from the epicenter, Bulan (pop. 28,500) 45 km away, Masbate (pop. 47,500) 53 km away, Catarman (pop. 47,400) 60 km away, Calbayog City (pop. 67,900) 61 km away, Sorsogon (pop. 82,700) 72 km away, and Legaspi (pop. 179,500) 98 km away.
