A very shallow magnitude 6.6 earthquake was reported in the morning near Yakutat, Yakutat City and, Alaska, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, December 6th, 2025, at 11:41 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Yakutat (pop. 660) located 55 miles from the epicenter.

The latest lava fountaining episode has started at the Halema’uma’u summit vents. It marks the 38th episode since the series began almost a year ago in Dec 2024.
The volcano observatory reports: “Episode 38 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 8:45 a.m. HST on December 6 with steeping increasing tremor and decreasing tilt. Sustained lava fountains approximately 50-100 feet (15-30 meters) in height are currently erupting from the north vent. Fountain heights are increasing rapidly and are coming from both the left and right vents within the north cone..
