An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 9 minutes ago 73 km southwest of Banga, Philippines, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Banga, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines, early evening on Sunday, October 12th, 2025, at 7:54 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mabay (pop. 3,200) located 20 km from the epicenter, Maitum (pop. 8,500) 20 km away, Malisbeng (pop. 4,500) 25 km away, Kiamba (pop. 11,000) 29 km away, and Lake Sebu (pop. 21,800) 51 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Surallah (pop. 31,100) located 66 km from the epicenter, Banga (pop. 58,900) 73 km away, Tupi
