Chile was shaken near Pozo Almonte, Provincia del Tamarugal, Tarapacá, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 only 7 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 89.30 km beneath the epicenter near Pozo Almonte, Provincia del Tamarugal, Tarapacá, Chile, early morning on Friday, September 19th, 2025, at 1:55 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mamiña (pop. 320) located 29 km from the epicenter, Pica (pop. 9,300) 34 km away, La Tirana (pop. 1,500) 61 km away, Pozo Almonte (pop. 15,700) 74 km away, Huara (pop. 2,700) 80 km away, Alto Hospicio (pop. 108,400) 107 km away, and Iquique (pop. 191,500) 112
