A very shallow magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported in the evening near Rexburg, Madison County, Idaho, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, at 9:19 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lima (pop. 220) located 18 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dillon (pop. 4,200) located 49 miles from the epicenter, Saint Anthony (pop. 3,500) 50 miles away, Ashton (pop. 1,100) 52 miles away, Sugar City (pop. 1,300) 54 miles away, Rexburg (pop. 27,700) 56
