A very shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported early morning near Merredin, Western Australia, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025, at 2:01 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in South Yelbeni (pop. 29) located 1 miles from the epicenter.
In North Tammin (pop. 120) located 15 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Wyalkatchem (pop. 400) located 17 miles from the epicenter, Kellerberrin (pop. 960) 24 miles away, and Merredin (pop. 2,900) 40 miles away.
