Fri, 18 Apr 2025, 19:16 | BY: EARTHQUAKEMONITOR

A very shallow magnitude 2.8 earthquake was reported in the evening near Saint-Nazaire, Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France.
According to France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the quake hit on Friday, April 18th, 2025, at 9:09 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Barbatre (pop. 1,500) located 9 km from the epicenter, Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile (pop. 4,800) 15 km away, Saint-Jean-de-Monts (pop. 7,400) 17 km away, and L’Ile-d’Yeu (pop. 4,900) 18 km away. In Challans (pop. 18,900, 28 km away), Pornic (pop. 12,900, 29 km away), Saint-Nazaire (pop. 67,100, 45 km away), La Baule-Escoublac (pop. 17,800, 47 km away), and Nantes (pop. 318,800, 65 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
