An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred only 9 minutes ago 32 miles northeast of Valmy, Nevada, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Valmy, Humboldt County, Nevada, USA, early evening on Thursday, August 28th, 2025, at 7:17 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.7.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Valmy (pop. 37) located 32 miles from the epicenter, and Battle Mountain (pop. 3,600) 38 miles away. In Carlin (pop. 2,300, 48 miles away), and Winnemucca (pop. 7,900, 51 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
