Just 7 minutes ago, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Retalhuleu, Municipio de Retalhuleu, Departamento de Retalhuleu, Guatemala. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Saturday, August 9th, 2025, at 2:41 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Champerico (pop. 9,900) located 72 km from the epicenter, and Retalhuleu (pop. 90,500) 109 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Coatepeque (pop. 105,400) located 115 km from the epicenter, Mazatenango (pop. 77,400) 121 km away, and Malacatan (pop. 92,800) 131 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send
