A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Liberia, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, was reported only 9 minutes ago by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Sunday, April 13th, 2025, at 3:30 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tamarindo (pop. 6,400) located 53 km from the epicenter, Sardinal (pop. 3,300) 61 km away, Belen (pop. 2,700) 70 km away, Santa Cruz (pop. 12,300) 78 km away, La Cruz (pop. 4,300) 79 km away, Liberia (pop. 45,400) 83 km away, Nicoya (pop. 15,300) 97 km away, Rivas (pop. 30,000) 99 km away, and San José (pop. 31,400) 121
