An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the morning on Thursday, April 24th, 2025, at 9:07 am local time near Hachinohe, Hachinohe Shi, Aomori, Japan, as reported by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 62. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kuji (pop. 34,400) located 27 km from the epicenter, Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) 40 km away, Hitokawame (pop. 24,300) 51 km away, Ninohe (pop. 23,500) 55 km away, Misawa (pop. 42,800) 58 km away, Towada (pop. 60,700) 68 km away, Miyako (pop. 51,200) 82 km away, and Takizawa (pop. 55,300) 95 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include
