An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred only 8 minutes ago 17 km southeast of Hualien City, Taiwan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 13.40 km beneath the epicenter near Hualien City, Hualien County, Taiwan, early evening on Monday, December 8th, 2025, at 7:24 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Hualien City (pop. 99,500) located 17 km from the epicenter.
In Puli (pop. 86,400) located 70 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lugu (pop. 17,700) located 91 km from the epicenter, Zhushan (pop. 44,100) 98 km away, Zhongxing
