An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred 37 minutes ago 57 km southwest of San Jose, Costa Rica, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 22. km beneath the epicenter near San Jose, San José, Provincia de San Jose, Costa Rica, in the evening on Monday, December 29th, 2025, at 9:14 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Quepos (pop. 7,800) located 11 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tejar (pop. 22,400) located 33 km from the epicenter, San Rafael Abajo (pop. 27,400) 43 km away, Aserri (pop. 25,900) 49 km away, San Miguel (pop. 28,800) 52 km away, Curridabat (pop. 34,600) 57 km away, San Jose (pop. 335,000) 57 km away, Paraiso (pop. 39,700) 61 km away, San Francisco (pop. 55,900) 62 km away, and Puntarenas (pop. 35,700) 87 km away.
