An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred only 30 minutes ago 6 km northwest of Katowice, Poland, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 8. km beneath the epicenter near Katowice, Silesian Voivodeship, Poland, in the morning on Thursday, December 18th, 2025, at 10:30 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Swietochlowice (pop. 55,600) located 3 km from the epicenter, and Chorzow (pop. 113,400) 4 km away.
