An intermediate to deep magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported early morning near Balayan, Batangas, Calabarzon, Philippines.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Sunday, August 17th, 2025, at 4:35 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 160.40 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Calatagan (pop. 16,100) located 11 km from the epicenter, Balayan (pop. 50,100) 15 km away, Balayan (pop. 50,100) 15 km away, Calaca (pop. 37,400) 18 km away, Calaca (pop. 37,400) 18 km away, Nasugbu (pop. 62,900) 31 km away, Batangas (pop. 237,400) 36 km away, Calamba (pop. 539,700) 66 km away, Manila (pop. 1,600,000) 94 km away, and Quezon City (pop. 2,761,700) 101 km away.
