A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported early morning near Marsala, Province of Trapani, Sicily, Italy.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, August 26th, 2025, at 6:07 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Marettimo (pop. 660) located 54 km from the epicenter, Marsala (pop. 77,900) 91 km away, Trapani (pop. 67,500) 92 km away, Casa Santa (pop. 23,900) 93 km away, and Paceco (pop. 9,400) 95 km away.
