An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred only 18 minutes ago 111 km north of Naze, Japan, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 20. km beneath the epicenter near Naze, Amami Shi, Kagoshima-ken, Japan, early morning on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, at 2:15 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 4.6, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tatsugo (pop. 6,000) located 101 km from the epicenter, and Naze (pop. 41,400) 111 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re
