A very shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported early morning near Tennant Creek, Barkly, Northern Territory, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Monday, September 22nd, 2025, at 6:50 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Tennant Creek (pop. 3,200, 21 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
