A very shallow magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported early evening near Jalal-Abad, Jalal-Abad oblast, Kyrgyzstan.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, at 7:44 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 7. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Massy (pop. 19,800) located 26 km from the epicenter, Bazar-Korgon (pop. 41,000) 30 km away, Kochkor-Ata (pop. 17,200) 31 km away, Tash-Kumyr (pop. 23,600) 35 km away, Suzak (pop. 30,500) 50 km away, Jalal-Abad (pop. 123,200) 51 km away, and Toktogul (pop. 20,600) 70 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Osh (pop. 322,200) located 86 km from the epicenter.
