Worldwide earthquakes above magnitude 3 during the past 24 hours on 23 Aug 2025

Summary: 1 quake 6.0+, 7 quakes 5.0+, 30 quakes 4.0+, 157 quakes 3.0+, 330 quakes 2.0+ (525 total)
A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Drake Passage — between South America and Antarctica — late yesterday, prompting Chilean authorities to issue a tsunami advisory for parts of Antarctica. Although no evacuation orders were issued, the alert remains active (Associated Press).
Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey reports that Deep East Texas experienced its third quake in under 24 hours, with the latest and strongest registering at magnitude 3.2 near Huxley—though no damage or injuries have been indicated (KTRE News).
According to our monitoring system, global seismicity during the past 24 hours has been unusually elevated recently — an exceptionally active period marked by one quake above magnitude 7, several in the magnitude 5 range and widespread moderate activity across various regions. Many of the quakes in the magnitude 5 range are still aftershocks of the massive 8.8 quake in Kamchatka 4 weeks ago – these are likely to continue for months to come and only slowly fade away.
In addition to the Drake Passage and Texas events, several magnitude-5 tremors were recorded near La Rioja, Argentina—evidencing the broad geographic spread of seismicity. Thankfully, no confirmed damage
