The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) reported a magnitude 3.3 quake in Switzerland near Sitten, Sion District, Canton du Valais, only 3 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday, April 19th, 2025, at 10:27 am local time at a very shallow depth of 9.20 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saas-Fee (pop. 1,600) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Saas-Grund (pop. 1,100) 8 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Zermatt (pop. 6,600) located 15 km from the epicenter, Visp (pop. 6,600) 28 km away, Domodossola (pop. 17,800) 28 km away, and Naters (pop. 7,600) 31 km away. In Sierre (pop. 15,800, 41 km away), Sitten (pop. 28,000, 49 km away), and Verbania (pop. 31,100, 49 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
