The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Vanuatu near Luganville, Sanma Province, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Wednesday, December 24th, 2025, at 7:42 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 157. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Port-Olry (pop. 1,300) located 43 km from the epicenter, Hog Harbour (pop. 1000) 52 km away, Luganville (pop. 13,400) 95 km away, and Sola (pop. 1,200) 97 km away.
