The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.0 quake in the United States near Elko, Elko County, Nevada, only 7 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2025, at 7:50 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10.1 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Valmy (pop. 37) located 35 miles from the epicenter, Battle Mountain (pop. 3,600) 39 miles away, Golconda (pop. 210) 43 miles away, Carlin (pop. 2,300) 46 miles away, Winnemucca (pop. 7,900) 55 miles away, and Elko (pop. 20,300) 56 miles away.
