An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred in the morning on Monday, May 12th, 2025, at 10:09 am local time near Padangsidempuan, Kota Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 97. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Padangsidempuan (pop. 236,200) located 58 km from the epicenter, and Sibolga (pop. 91,300) 70 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tarutung (pop. 39,500) located 102 km from the epicenter.
