Worldwide earthquakes above magnitude 3 during the past 24 hours on 28 Aug 2025

Summary: 4 quakes 5.0+, 39 quakes 4.0+, 144 quakes 3.0+, 312 quakes 2.0+ (499 total)
The past 24 hours have seen about average to lower-than-average earthquake activity globally, mostly focused along the very active subduction zones along the Pacific.
Key Highlights:

Further south, the “Ring of Fire” showed activity with a Magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, and a Magnitude 4.7 in Southern Sumatra, Indonesia. These events are typical for this highly seismic zone. Japan also saw several quakes, including a Magnitude 4.8 near Ie, a Magnitude 4.5 near Nemuro, and another Magnitude 4.5 in the Izu Islands region.
Back on the opposite side of the Pacific, a Magnitude 4.5 occurred off the coast of Panama. An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 was registered in Papua New Guinea. A Magnitude 4.1 was reported off the coast of Mexico.
