An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred early afternoon on Monday, December 8th, 2025, at 3:44 pm local time near Saint-Brieuc, Côtes-d’Armor, Bretagne, France, as reported by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Canihuel (pop. 430) located 5 km from the epicenter, Saint-Nicolas-du-Pelem (pop. 2,000) 10 km away, and Quintin (pop. 3,000) 12 km away. In Guingamp (pop. 9,000, 22 km away), Ploufragan (pop. 11,600, 24 km away), Saint-Brieuc (pop. 52,800, 27 km away), Plerin (pop. 13,900, 28 km away), Pontivy (pop. 16,800, 35 km away), and Lannion (pop. 21,500, 49 km away), the quake was probably not felt.

A very shallow magnitude 5.7 earthquake was reported after midnight near Hachinohe, Hachinohe Shi, Aomori, Japan.
According to Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025, at 12:33 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0.20 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Hitokawame (pop. 24,300) located 97 km from the epicenter, and Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) 98 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Misawa (pop. 42,800) located 100 km from the epicenter, Kuji (pop. 34,400) 101 km away, Towada (pop. 60,700) 116 km away, and Mutsu (pop. 56,200) 121 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant
