An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred late at night on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at 11:16 pm local time near Messina, Province of Messina, Sicily, Italy, as reported by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 48.90 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.6 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Larderia (pop. 2,500) located 5 km from the epicenter, Messina (pop. 219,900) 12 km away, Reggio Calabria (pop. 182,500) 18 km away, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (pop. 34,600) 21 km away, and Milazzo (pop. 31,800) 22 km away. In Palmi (pop. 18,600, 44 km away), Giarre (pop. 24,100, 50 km away), and Acireale (pop. 49,500, 62 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
