The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) reported a magnitude 3.0 quake in Switzerland near Herisau, Bezirk Hinterland, Kanton Appenzell Ausserrhoden, only 3 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Saturday, December 6th, 2025, at 12:54 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Herisau (pop. 15,700) located 2 km from the epicenter, Gossau (pop. 17,000) 4 km away, and Sankt Gallen (pop. 75,800) 7 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Appenzell (pop. 5,600) located 11 km from the epicenter, Eschen (pop. 4,500) 26 km away, and Mauren (pop. 4,400) 27 km away. In Schaan (pop. 6,000, 30 km away), Vaduz (pop. 5,200, 32 km away), and Zurich (pop. 415,400, 57 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
