A shallow magnitude 5.3 earthquake was reported around noon near Mogok, Pyin Oo Lwin District, Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma).
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, at 1:58 pm local time at a shallow depth of 11. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Mogok (pop. 90,800) located 43 km from the epicenter, and Shwebo (pop. 88,900) 50 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ye-u (pop. 20,500) located 70 km from the epicenter, Mandalay (pop. 1,208,100) 93 km away, Pyin Oo Lwin (pop. 117,300) 93 km away, Sagaing (pop. 78,700) 104 km away, and Monywa (pop. 182,000) 127 km away.
