A very shallow magnitude 2.6 earthquake was reported in the morning near Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, August 14th, 2025, at 11:14 am local time at a very shallow depth of 0.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Columbus (pop. 990) located 5 miles from the epicenter, and Dana (pop. 3,300) 10 miles away. In Hendersonville (pop. 13,800, 15 miles away), Greer (pop. 28,400, 26 miles away), Asheville (pop. 88,500, 28 miles away), Taylors (pop. 21,600, 28 miles away), Wade Hampton (pop. 20,600, 30 miles away), and Spartanburg (pop. 37,900, 30 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
