A magnitude 3.4 earthquake near Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, was reported only 15 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in the Dominican Republic. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0.50 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025, at 9:48 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pedro Garcia (pop. 1,500) located 4 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Monte Llano (pop. 19,000) located 13 km from the epicenter, and Rio Grande (pop. 20,200) 14 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tamboril (pop. 23,300) located 16 km from the epicenter, Puerto Plata (pop. 146,000) 19 km away, Santiago de los Caballeros (pop. 1,200,000)
