An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred early morning on Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, at 3:58 am local time near Chania, Crete, Greece, as reported by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 18.90 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kalives (pop. 15) located 55 km from the epicenter, Kissamos (pop. 4,200) 67 km away, Palaiochora (pop. 2,400) 75
