The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.8 quake in the Northern Mariana Islands near San Jose, Tinian Municipality, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Tuesday, December 16th, 2025, at 9:06 am local time at an intermediate depth of 94. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.9, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Jose (pop. 15,000) located 79 km from the epicenter, Saipan (pop. 48,200) 100 km away, Garapan (pop. 5,200) 101 km away, and Yigo Village (pop. 20,500) 143 km away.
