The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.0 quake in Algeria near Algiers, Wilaya d’Alger, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Wednesday, December 24th, 2025, at 7:25 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. A third agency, Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ain Bessem (pop. 32,500) located 21 km from the epicenter, and Sour el Ghozlane (pop. 44,000) 24 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chellalat el Adhaouara (pop. 26,100) located 33 km from the epicenter, Lakhdaria (pop. 42,900) 39 km away, Larbaa (pop. 58,300) 45 km away,
