Just 12 minutes ago, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Montemorelos, Estado de Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The tremor was recorded early evening on Sunday, May 11th, 2025, at 7:29 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 9.54 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Espiritu Santo (pop. 110) located 7 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Montemorelos (pop. 67,400) located 24 km from the epicenter, Montemorelos (pop. 37,700) 24 km away, Linares (pop. 63,100) 42 km away, and Ciudad de Allende (pop. 26,100) 43 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cadereyta (pop. 68,000) located 55 km from the epicenter,
