An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred in the evening on Saturday, May 17th, 2025, at 9:54 pm local time near Kyaukse, Kyaukse District, Mandalay Region, Myanmar (Burma), as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kyaukse (pop. 50,500) located 31 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Meiktila (pop. 177,400) located 55 km from the epicenter, Sagaing (pop. 78,700) 59 km away, Myingyan (pop. 141,700) 66 km away, Mandalay (pop. 1,208,100) 70 km away, Pyin Oo Lwin (pop. 117,300)
