A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Piombino, Province of Livorno, Tuscany, Italy, was reported only 29 minutes ago by France’s Military Applications Division – Earth and Environmental Science (CEA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, at 11:51 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Andrea (pop. 170) located 16 km from the epicenter, Marina di Campo (pop. 2,100) 20 km away, Campo nell’Elba (pop. 4,200) 20 km away, Portoferraio (pop. 8,300) 28 km away, Bastia (pop. 41,000) 45 km away, and Piombino (pop. 34,000) 50 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Follonica (pop. 21,200) located 67 km from the epicenter, and Cecina (pop.
