Just 3 minutes ago, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Friday, December 12th, 2025, at 3:30 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Templeton (pop. 7,700) located 5 miles from the epicenter, Atascadero (pop. 29,800) 8 miles away, Paso Robles (pop. 27,200) 8 miles away, and Morro Bay (pop. 10,600) 13 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Los Osos (pop. 14,300) located 16 miles from the epicenter, San Luis Obispo (pop. 47,300) 20 miles away, Arroyo Grande (pop. 18,100) 32 miles away, and Nipomo (pop. 16,700) 39 miles away.
