A moderately shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported in the morning near Concepcion, Provincia de Concepción, Region del Biobio, Chile.
According to The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, the quake hit on Thursday, January 1st, 2026, at 10:25 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 54. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa Juana (pop. 13,200) located 4 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hualqui (pop. 24,300) located 20 km from the epicenter, Lota (pop. 47,300) 23 km away, Coronel (pop. 92,900) 24 km away, Chiguayante (pop. 84,700) 27 km away, Concepcion (pop. 223,600) 38 km away, San
