An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred late at night on Monday, December 8th, 2025, at 11:55 pm local time near Kitami, Kitami Shi, Hokkaido, Japan, as reported by Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a great depth of 317.50 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Teshikaga (pop. 7,600) located 21 km from the epicenter, Motomachi (pop. 23,000) 29 km away, Kitami (pop. 119,100) 41 km away, Abashiri (pop. 35,800) 43 km away, Nakashibetsu (pop. 24,000) 51 km away, Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 63 km away, Kushiro (pop. 167,900) 74 km away, and Engaru (pop. 19,200) 79 km away.
