A shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Vernal, Uintah County, Utah, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, at 5:57 pm local time at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Maeser (pop. 3,600) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Vernal (pop. 11,200) 6 miles away, Naples (pop. 2,200) 7 miles away, Ballard (pop. 1,100) 19 miles away, and Roosevelt (pop. 7,000) 21 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Duchesne (pop. 1,900) located 45 miles from the epicenter, and Rangely (pop.
