A moderately shallow magnitude 5.6 earthquake was reported early morning near Banga, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, at 5:42 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 30.70 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Maitum (pop. 8,500) located 43 km from the epicenter, Kiamba (pop. 11,000) 51 km away, and Lake Sebu (pop. 21,800) 74 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Surallah (pop. 31,100) located 89 km from the epicenter, Banga (pop. 58,900) 96 km away, Koronadal (pop. 195,400) 107 km away, and General Santos (pop. 697,300) 111 km away.
