The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 2.4 quake in Germany near Schopfheim, Freiburg Region, Baden-Wurttemberg, only 23 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, December 31st, 2025, at 4:15 am local time at a very shallow depth of 7. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Military Applications Division – Earth and Environmental Science (CEA) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Herrischried (pop. 2,800) located 5 km from the epicenter. In Schopfheim (pop. 19,400, 12 km away), Bad Sackingen (pop. 16,500, 16 km away), Rheinfelden (pop. 32,500, 20 km away), Rheinfelden (Baden) (pop. 32,500, 20 km away), Loerrach (pop. 47,000, 24 km away), Liestal (pop. 12,800, 29 km away), and Freiburg (pop. 216,000, 34 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
