An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 10 minutes ago 44 km northeast of Mek’ele, Ethiopia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Mek’ele, Tigray, Ethiopia, early evening on Saturday, October 11th, 2025, at 7:02 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Shaguby (pop. 500) located 8 km from the epicenter.
In Wik’ro (pop. 64,000) located 25 km from the epicenter, Dolo (pop. 41,400) 30 km away, and Mek’ele (pop. 457,900) 44 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Idaga Hamus (pop. 25,400) located 60 km from the epicenter, Adigrat (pop. 121,800) 74
