An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred in the afternoon on Saturday, December 27th, 2025, at 5:42 pm local time near Dhekiajuli, Sonitpur, Assam, India, as reported by India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Dhekiajuli (pop. 21,600) located 17 km from the epicenter, Udalguri (pop. 15,900) 21 km away, Kharupatia (pop. 18,600) 28 km away, Dhing (pop. 20,800) 32 km away, Rangapara (pop. 18,700) 38 km away, Mangaldai (pop. 26,000) 42 km away, Tezpur (pop. 75,500) 50 km away, and Nagaon (pop. 121,600) 54 km away.
