A magnitude 6.7 earthquake near Hachinohe, Hachinohe Shi, Aomori, Japan, was reported only 10 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 37. km beneath the epicenter around noon on Friday, December 12th, 2025, at 12:44 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 6.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kuji (pop. 34,400) located 125 km from the epicenter, Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) 128 km away, Misawa (pop. 42,800) 132 km away, Towada (pop. 60,700) 148 km away, and Mutsu (pop. 56,200) 152 km away, the quake should have been felt as
