A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported early morning near Kanazawa, Ishikawa-ken, Japan.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Monday, December 15th, 2025, at 4:03 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France’s Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 4.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Takaoka (pop. 170,100) located 47 km from the epicenter, Kanazawa (pop. 466,000) 50 km away, Imizu (pop. 90,700) 53 km away, Matsuto (pop. 110,400) 60 km away, Komatsu (pop. 108,500)
