An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred only 7 minutes ago 10 km north of Taitung, Taiwan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 11.80 km beneath the epicenter near Taitung, Taiwan, in the afternoon on Wednesday, December 24th, 2025, at 5:47 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Taitung (pop. 103,300) located 10 km from the epicenter.
In Chaozhou (pop. 55,100) located 71 km from the epicenter, Donggang (pop. 47,700) 84 km away, Fengshan (pop. 356,500) 85 km away, Yongkang (pop. 233,700) 94 km away, and Tainan (pop. 1,856,600) 97 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Xinying (pop. 75,000) located 100 km from the epicenter, and
